KATHMANDU: The World Bank has projected that Nepal’s economic growth will slow significantly in the fiscal year 2008/83. According to the World Bank’s ‘Nepal Development Update’, the economic growth rate is expected to slow down to 2.3 percent next year from 4.6 percent in the current fiscal year.

The report points to the long-term effects of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and the internal instability of September 2025 as the main reasons for the slowdown in growth. The slowdown in tourism activities, increase in transportation costs and disruptions in supply chains will put pressure on the economy, he said.

According to the World Bank, if the conflict prolongs, there is a risk of reducing tourist arrivals, reducing remittance flow and weakening consumption. The report also warns that this will have a negative impact on overall economic activity. However, the report also shows some positive signs. Political stability, sound economic management and structural reforms following the recently concluded elections could boost investor confidence.

David Sislane, World Bank Division Director for the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka, said that private-led growth was necessary to strengthen economic resilience and create jobs in Nepal. He also stressed on improving the trade environment, infrastructure development, mobilization of private finance, and promotion of priority sectors such as tourism, information technology and agribusiness.

Meanwhile, according to the World Bank’s ‘South Asia Economic Update’, overall economic growth in South Asia is also expected to slow down. Regional growth is projected to slow to 6.3 per cent in 2026 from 7 per cent in 2025. But in 2027, it is expected to return to 6.9 percent.

Kathmandu.
