KATHMANDU: The National Committee of Nepal Financial Institutions Employees Association (NFI) has demanded a fair and transparent investigation into the alleged mental harassment, retaliatory transfer, interference in trade union rights and workers’ rights.

} The association has described this incident not as a limited issue within a single bank, but as a sensitive issue related to labor relations, corporate governance and employee rights of the entire financial sector. “We have been working to protect the professional rights of our employees working in banks, insurance, microfinance, capital markets and other financial institutions across Nepal and maintain good governance and transparency in the financial sector,” the statement reads.

According to the association, although the internal investigation process was initiated after the complaint was filed against the employees working in the commercial branch of the bank on the basis of the facts and details submitted by the Nepal SBI Bank Employees Association (NSBIU) to the concerned body, instead of taking the process to an impartial conclusion, the issue has been seriously raised that the employees and trade union representatives associated with the complainant were subjected to retaliatory behavior, mental pressure was created and attempts were made to weaken the organizational activities.TAG_OPEN_p_15 “It is unacceptable both legally and morally to take retaliatory transfer, mental pressure or other administrative action against an employee on the basis of such activities,” the statement reads.

The association has demanded an independent, fair and transparent investigation into the alleged incident at Nepal SBI Bank.TAG_OPEN_p_14 Likewise, the committee has stressed the need of making necessary reforms by immediately reviewing the decisions taken on the complainants, aggrieved employees and trade union office-bearers. The FIEUN has also demanded that the report of the entire investigation process, including the Complaint Redressal Committee, be made available to the concerned parties and the decision should be taken in accordance with the principles of natural justice. The association believes that trust between the employees and management will be maintained only if the investigation process is transparent and credible.

Similarly, the bank management should take necessary policy and practical steps to ensure trade union rights, freedom of expression, safe and dignified workplace.TAG_OPEN_p_13 Ensuring an environment in which employees can freely express their professional rights, raise grievances and protect their rights through the organization is the foundation of corporate governance.

The association has also urged the Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) and its regulatory bodies to take necessary initiatives to ensure the effective implementation of labour rights, corporate governance, internal control system and existing legal provisions in the financial sector.TAG_OPEN_p_12 The association believes that people’s trust in the banking system will be strengthened only when the rights of employees are protected and institutional transparency is strengthened in the financial institutions.

The FIEUN has expressed its full solidarity with the demands raised by the Nepal SBI Bank Employees Association and stated that these demands are related to workers’ welfare, justice and rule of law.TAG_OPEN_p_11 In addition, all stakeholders should play a responsible role in ensuring a safe, respectful, non-discriminatory and retaliatory working environment for all employees of the financial sector.

According to labor relations experts, it is necessary to give priority to the legal process, corporate governance and transparency while resolving such disputes between employees and management in the financial sector.TAG_OPEN_p_10 According to them, a long-term solution is possible only by objectively evaluating both the grievances raised by the employees and the views of the management.

.
