The devastating floods in the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli corridor on August 10 have caused a huge physical and economic loss to the industry, trade and commercial sectors. According to the Nuwakot Chamber of Commerce and Industry, more than one thousand eight hundred industries and businesses, both small and big, have been completely damaged by the floods.

In a meeting with Chandra Prasad Dhakal, former president of the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI), the flood-affected businessmen demanded immediate resumption of business. They lamented that most of the industries and businesses damaged by the floods are in trouble as they have taken loans through banks. One of the flood-affected businessmen demanded that the government should renew the loans taken by the flood-affected businessmen and waive the loans.

He said, “Due to the flood in the Bhotekoshi river in Rasuwa, 1,800 small and big industries and businesses have been damaged. Some industrialists have reached zero. Crushers and tippers have all been swept away. All types of industries and businesses near the river have been swept away. All their businesses were invested in loans through banks. Therefore, the government should waive the interest on that loan. Those who have insured the industries and businesses. They do not even have papers. There is also a demand that if the claimed amount is paid, we can survive again. Now all the industrialists and businessmen are coming to us. There is also a fear that the government will not listen to us because we are a private sector. Therefore, take this demand to the government through the federation. ‘

Another flood-affected businessman urged Chairman Dhakal to make arrangements to renew the loan taken from banks and financial institutions for at least three years and to take initiative to pay the insurance claim amount immediately without hassle. He said, “Now at least we businessmen should renew the loans taken through banks for at least 3 years. We should also make arrangements for hassle-free assistance through insurance. You should also convey these demands to the complaint section of the Rastra Bank. If the government and banks cooperate in this time of crisis, we will rise again. We feel that we should move forward together to help the flood-affected businessmen by creating a separate fund of the private sector.” ‘

Stating that the federation is with the flood-affected industrialists, he also expressed commitment to take initiatives for the revival. Former President Dhakal also expressed his commitment to take initiatives with the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank and the Finance Minister to resolve the problems related to loans and insurance of the flood-affected industrialists.

He said, “This flood has caused a lot of pain to the industrialists and businessmen of the private sector. I want to assure you that I am with you in this time of crisis. Therefore, let’s immediately sort out the problem of our basic needs. In the beginning, when the relatives are out of contact and there is no relief, then we should move forward by solving the problem of gas, shelter, clothes. For this, we need to face this disaster together rather than any political party or government. Then we should find a solution to the business problem. We can rise above any problem. Then I want to assure you that I will do it on behalf of Global IME Bank regarding the matter of banks and insurance. And I also want to assure the Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank and the Finance Minister that we will take initiative for some help regarding the loans and insurance of industrialists. You are not alone. We are all with you. ’

He also expressed the belief that necessary decision would be taken regarding the support that can be provided by Global IME Bank.

Kathmandu.
