Although some banks have kept the interest rates stable, the average maximum interest rate of individual fixed deposits has come down compared to August.

The average maximum interest rate on personal fixed deposits of commercial banks for September has come down to 4.0895 per cent. The average rate was 4.136 per cent in August. Similarly, the average interest rate of institutional fixed deposits has also come down from 3.081 per cent in August to 3.0665 per cent in September.

According to the interest rates released by the banks, Prabhu Bank will give the highest interest rate of 4.55 percent for personal fixed deposits in September. Sanima, Machhapuchchhre and Nepal Investment Mega Bank have fixed the interest rate at 4.5 percent.

Similarly, Nepal SBI Bank has set the maximum interest rate of 4.10 per cent while NIC Asia, Rastriya Banijya Bank, Prime Commercial Bank, Global IME Bank and Himalayan Bank have fixed the interest rate of 4.15 per cent.

Nabil Bank has reduced the maximum interest rate on personal fixed deposits to 4.25 per cent. The bank had reduced the interest rate on personal fixed deposits to 4.55 per cent in August. Everest Bank has also reduced the interest rate on personal deposits to 3.50 per cent. The rate was 4.05 per cent in August. Standard Chartered Bank has reduced the maximum interest rate on personal fixed deposits to 3.75 per cent. It was 3.8 per cent in August. Kumari Bank has also reduced the interest rate from 3.76 per cent to 3.73 per cent.

Sanima Bank has fixed the highest interest rate of 3.51 percent for institutional fixed deposits. Nepal Bank, Sanima, NIC Asia, Rastriya Banijya Bank, Prime Commercial, Nepal SBI and Standard Chartered Bank have fixed interest rates in the range of 2.75 to 3.51 percent.

The reduction in the interest rate of personal deposits by the banks in September indicates that the demand for loans in the banking system is weak compared to deposits. As the demand for loans has not increased as expected, the money to be invested in the banks is increasing. In such a situation, the competition to increase the interest rate to attract deposits seems to be weak.

In September, many banks have kept interest rates stable while some have reduced the rate of individual fixed deposits. The rate of institutional deposits has been relatively little changed.

Banks have been making public the interest rates of fixed deposits before the beginning of every month. Although there is a difference in the interest rate on individual deposits for September, the overall average rate has decreased.

KATHMANDU: Commercial banks have reduced the interest rate on fixed deposits for the month of September due to high liquidity in the banking system and weak demand for loans.
