Kathmandu. The microfinance survivors continued their hunger strike at Maitighar Mandala in Kathmandu on Wednesday. The hunger strike led by the Struggle Committee against microfinance and financial exploitation began on Tuesday and continued for the second day on Wednesday.
The protesters have demanded social justice and an end to financial exploitation. They have demanded immediate implementation of the three-point report of the microfinance victims as per the Supreme Court’s mandamus order.
The demands issued by the committee include scrapping the Special Financial Act and implementing a financial system based on the Civil Code and providing free loans to the poor, workers, landless squatters and farmers with interest exemption. Likewise, the victims have also demanded that the government should provide employment and appropriate wages on the basis of the needs and capacity of the citizens.
The agitating side has also put forth a long-standing demand to abolish the private banks and financial institutions and establish socialist economy in the country.
The struggle committee has said that it will continue the agitation and hunger strike until their demands are met.
