Kathmandu. Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) lawmaker Lima Adhikari has demanded that the secretary of the Ministry of Finance should be removed from the board of directors of the Nepal Rastra Bank to make it autonomous. She said this during the discussion on the bill designed to amend the Nepal Rastra Bank Act, 2058 BS in the Finance Committee of the House of Representatives.
She said that the government will interfere when the representative of the Ministry of Finance is a member of the board of the Rastra Bank. He said that it would not be appropriate to keep the Finance Secretary as a board member to minimize the interference of the executive in the fiscal and monetary policy. She said that the representation of the finance ministry is necessary only for coordination between the finance ministry and the central bank in the countries which are in the initial stage of development.
According to him, there is no need for a representative of the Ministry of Finance in the board as Nepal Rastra Bank has been claiming that it is the best monitoring system in South Asia.
She also demanded that at least one woman member should be made mandatory in the board of directors of the NRB. According to her, equal representation should be ensured in the central bank as there is a provision of women directors in banks and financial institutions.
